"WAKE UP THE WORLD" - Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life

On the first Sunday of Advent last year Pope Francis proclaimed the beginning of a Year of Consecrated Life that will end on 2 February 2016, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. 2015 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium which speaks of religious in its sixth chapter and of the Decree Perfectae Caritatis on the renewal of religious life. On this occasion, we bishops are addressing this letter both to the many dedicated men and women in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands especially consecrated to God but also to all the faithful People of God in all of our dioceses.

To a Fellow Missionary Disciple

In his Encyclical Letter, Redemptoris Missio (1990), Pope Saint John Paul II reminded us that:

"...there must be no lessening of the impetus to preach the Gospel and to establish new churches among peoples or communities where they do not yet exist, for this is the first task of the Church - which has been sent forth to all peoples and to the very ends of the earth" (RM, 34).  He goes on to say:

"The missions ask not only for a contribution but a sharing in the work of preaching and charity toward the poor.  All that we have received from God - life itself as well as material goods - does not belong to us but is given to us for our use" (RM, 81)

In his Apostolic Exortation, Evangelii Gaudium (2013), Pope Francis says:

"In virtue of their Baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19).  The new evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized" (EG, 120).

We realize that you may not be able to come to Papua New Guinea.  But, as the missionary disciple that you already are, I invite you to share in our mission here in the Diocese of Mendi.  Our needs are great - building churches, convents, priest houses, schools, health centers; educating seminarians and catechists; caring for the poor and sick; providing transportation for our dedicated priests and Sisters to travel to the bush to conduct their pastoral work, etc. Still, God's goodness and Providence always overwhelms us.

I invite you to share in our mission through your offering of prayers and daily sacrifices.  Prayer of this kind unites us and it makes you truly present to us in our life and ministry here.  If you are able, I also humbly ask for a sharing in our 'preaching and charity toward the poor' in a material way.

If you would like to send this kind of a sharing, you can do so through our mission office in the USA.  The contact details are below.

In any case, know that you are in our grateful thoughts and prayers as we all continue to respond to the great call of Pope Francis, echoing the call of Jesus himself for us to become His missionary disciples.

Fraternally and gratefully in Christ, the first and best missionary,

bishop donald

Financial contributions can be sent to us through the Capuchin Mission Office.  One-hundred percent of your sharing will come directly to the Diocese of Mendi.  (Our banking information for online transfers will be sent This email address is being protected from spambots.
