The Ambassador of the United States of America to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, His Excellency Walter North visited Mendi.  Ambassador North was received at the airport by an enthusiastic crowd of hundreds of parishioners,

some dressed in their traditional attire.  Many children and young people came to add to the festivities.  A group of children led the gathering in a heartfelt rendering of the PNG National Anthem and the National Pledge.  The students of the Community Health Workers school (run by the diocese) sang the "Star Spangled Banner" - the National Anthem of the USA.  Ambassador North was visibly touched by all of this.

Ambassador North came to Mendi, at the invitation of Bishop Donald in order to participate in a Forum organized by the diocese to address the problem of sorcery-related violence.  In his impassioned address, the Ambassador paraphrased a saying attributed to the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr., "Injustice for anyone is a threat to justice for everyone."

Ambassador North was joined by experts on the topic from Australia, New Zealand together with representatives various sectors of the PNG society: church, law, justice, health, education, etc.

There was a great sense of hope that emerged from the well-attended forum.  The momentum that was begun will continue with a smaller working group headed by the bishop.
